Black Women of Vancouver: Making Place, Solidarity and Resistance in the Twentieth Century uncovers the understudied presence of Vancouver’s Black community in the twentieth century and the central role of its women in shaping spaces of belonging, activism, and cultural life. Drawing on spatial literary studies, Black feminism, and diaspora studies, the book reconstructs the geohistory of Hogan’s Alley—the city’s now-razed Black locus—as a site of both racialised dispossession, class struggle, and community resistance. Through the testimonies of Black women, both working- and middle-class, who lived in and around the neighbourhood, it explores how gender, class, and race intersected in the making of Black urban space. By recovering these histories, the book challenges dominant narratives of absence, criminality, and pessimism, offering instead a cartography of resistance and solidarity within and beyond Vancouver.
